About English

The study of English is central to the development of all young Australians. It contributes to the creation of confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and interact with others and with the world around them.

In the Victorian Curriculum F–10, the English curriculum includes two learning areas: English, and English as an Additional Language (EAL).

The aims of the English curriculum are ultimately the same for all students, beginning with an understanding how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning.

However for students for whom English is not their home language, the VCAA has provided the EAL curriculum to support both their language needs and developing further their language proficiency.

Note: The VCAA is developing the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0, starting with the publication of Mathematics and English.

You can access both the current English curriculum and English Version 2.0 using the menu on this page.

Go to the VCAA website to find information about timelines for English Version 2.0 and the rest of the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 and to find more supporting resources.
